Why writing tutoring?

One-on-one guidance from an experienced, empathetic educator can accelerate students toward a place of confidence, competence and independence as writers. Upon meeting students and assessing their needs, I provide materials and support to help them achieve both their short and long term goals. We can work with students’ existing school assignments, prompts and exercises of my design, or a combination—whatever works best for the student.

Tutoring sessions are tailored to each student’s specific needs.

A sampling of what tutoring sessions can encompass:

High school and college admission essays

In an era of AI-generated writing, authentic student voices stand out above the rest. I support students from start to finish as they craft their best possible admission essays. (More information on the Admissions Process Support page.)

Conquering the blank page

Does your child struggle to get started on writing assignments? They learn to break the impasse by practicing effective brainstorming and outlining techniques.

Expository, analytical and narrative writing

No matter the assignment type, I help students discover and develop their ideas through active listening, dialogue, and ongoing feedback.

Mastering the sentence

Through a focus on sentence structure and word choice, students learn to express and combine their ideas with logic, clarity and eloquence.

Creative writing

For students who want to work on creative writing, I provide everything from “quick write” prompts to studies in technique to personalized feedback on drafts.

A tutoring session includes a 50 minute zoom session with the student plus 10 minutes of preparation and email communication with parents.
